ST. MARYS — A fire destroyed a home on Pershing Drive, just west of St. Marys, Friday morning.
At approximately 3:20 a.m., members of the St. Marys Township Fire Department received a phone call reporting a blaze at 250 Pershing Drive. When firefighters arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames and the fire had spread into the rest of the residence.
ELIDA — It all came down to one final possession to decide the opening game of the annual Vicki Mauk Invitational Tournament on Thursday at the Elida Fieldhouse.
The Minster Wildcats trailed by one point but had the ball with 36 seconds left. The Wildcats’ Bridget Geiger got the rebound off a missed shot by Kayla Richard with 4.2 seconds left and was fouled by Imara Haynes. Geiger converted both shots and that was enough to give Minster a 57-56 victory over the Lima Senior Spartans.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
ST. MARYS — City officials praised the work of snow plow crews in St. Marys for keeping the roads safe during Wednesday’s blizzard.
As snow and winds whipped across the region, crews hit the streets to clear snow in an attempt to keep roads open as 8 inches of snow fell. The crews, which worked late into the night Wednesday, were back at work Thursday doing final clean up — which resulted in many roads being cleared down to the pavement by Thursday afternoon.
Bertha Elizabeth Anna (Mueller) Seger, 87, of Yorkshire, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on Dec. 23, 1925, on a farm east of Osgood, the youngest child of the late Anton and Elizabeth (Meyer) Mueller.
Jerry Yaney, 69, died at 9:26 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at his residence in St. Marys of natural causes.
He was born on May 12, 1943, in Celina to parents Charles William Yaney and Marquerite Linton Heindel.
His first wife, Brenda Gariety, preceded him in death.
On July 27, 1996, he married Valentina Kuzmyn, who survives him.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Charles Yaney.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Daniel Matus of Phoenix, Ariz; a brother and sister-in-law; a sister.
Gerald L. Boeke, 52, of 622 W. Greene St., Piqua, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1960, in Hazard, Ky., to the late Virgil and Edna (Paulus) Boeke. He was married to Sharon Lynn (Spencer) Boeke on May 24, 1981, and she survives in Piqua.
Also surviving is one son, Thomas and his wife Amy Boeke, of Piqua; one daughter, Danielle Boeke and her fiance Josh Chaney, both of Piqua; nine grandchildren; one sister, Karen and her husband Rick Westerbeck, of New Bremen.
Thomas D. Knous, 71, of 705 Kimberly Drive, St. Marys, died at 1:04 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Lima Memorial Hospital.
He was born on July 15, 1941, in Coldwater, the son of John and Alethea (Overly) Knous.
He married Barbara Ann Arnold on May 13, 1961, and she survives at the residence.

Gerald L. Boeke, 52, of Piqua, passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home in Sidney.
