COLDWATER — Coldwater’s late baseline-to-baseline inbounding gamble appeared to end badly, and with a minute left in the game the St. Marys boys basketball team had momentum behind it.
The break turned out to last about a second.
St. Marys’ fourth-quarter comeback fell short in the final minute as Coldwater won its season-opener over the Roughriders 59-52 on Saturday night.
KENTON 48, ST. MARYS 40
KENTON — Kenton dominated the fourth quarter to rally past St. Marys 48-40 on Friday night in a Western Buckeye League opener to stay unbeaten while denying the Roughriders their first win of the season.
St. Marys led 35-31 after three quarters in a halfcourt battle before Kenton outscored the Roughriders 17-5 in the fourth quarter.
St. Marys senior Garet Fledderjohann led all scorers with 18 points.
Quinn Zaerr added 11 points for the Riders with a pair of 3-pointers.
WAPAKONETA — Dressed in full uniform, area law enforcement officers accompany children and their parents through the front door of the Wapakoneta Walmart.
Leading a group, Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon comments on the smiles on their faces. He is not only talking about the children who are participating in the annual “Shop With a Cop” but he is addressing the officers with police departments, the sheriff’s office and the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
MINSTER — The F.J. Stallo Memorial Library in Minster was hopping with holiday fun and cheer Saturday morning during its Breakfast With Santa program.
The event, made possible with the help of Friends of the Library, invited children ages 4 through first grade to play holiday games, make Christmas crafts, eat breakfast and most importantly, meet the big man himself.
Branch Supervisor Becky Prenger, who organized the event and has been with the library for 30 years, said this is the first year in some time the library has held Breakfast With Santa.
Ronald Spitler, 78, of St. Marys, died on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System.
Arrangements are being completed with Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.
Nancy Templeton, 64, of New Knoxville, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at JTDM Hospital in St. Marys.
Arrangements are being completed with the Vornholt–Miller Funeral Home in New Knoxville.
Loretta S. Westerheide, 78, of Mount Vernon, died at her home on Dec. 15, 2012, in Mount Vernon.
She was born in Carthegena on April 22, 1934, to the late Adolph and Theresa (Wuebker) Severt. Loretta was a 1952 graduate of Memorial High School in St. Marys.
She met and married Robert L. Westerheide on June 25, 1960.
Benjamin John Puthoff, 29, died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1983, in St. Marys to parents Teresa J. (Schulze) and John Bernard Puthoff, who survive him in Fort Laramie.
He is also survived by a son, Brayden Puthoff of Minster; two sisters; two sets of grandparents; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather.
Alexander C. Reed, 87, died on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, Calif.
