ST. MARYS — What gift could be better, than the gift of loyalty, friendship and lifelong companionship? If you’re thinking of surprising a loved one with a pet, the answer might be “anything else.”

“A pet for a gift is not a good idea for an unsuspecting family member,” said Miranda Oden, manager at Auglaize County Humane Society in Wapakoneta. “It’s a responsibility, a commitment.”

District Has Security Plans

ST. MARYS — In the wake of the mass shooting that killed more than two dozen people at a Connecticut elementary school Friday morning, one local school official says he will review the district’s security plan.

Nicholas E. Miller, 59

December 14, 2012

Nicholas E. Miller, 59, of New Bremen died  at 6:02 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland following a brief illness.  

He was born March 2, 1953, in Lima.  He was the son of George and Betty (Moran) Miller, both of whom preceded him in death.  

On April 20, 1979, he married Debra Wright, who survives in New Bremen.

Teens Lead Officers On Pursuit

ST. MARYS — Two teens ended up being flown from a local hospital following a traffic pursuit with St. Marys police officers Thursday night.

An officer with the St. Marys Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop at 5:36 p.m. on Market Street, between Wayne and Main streets, for a vehicle traveling the wrong way down the road. At that point, the occupants in the vehicle reportedly switched places and took off before the officer could conduct the stop.

Teresa Slone Thornsberry, 52,

Teresa Slone Thornsberry, 52, of Raven, Ky., died on Dec. 12. 2012, in Hazard Kentucky Hospital.

She was born on June 11, 1960 in St. Marys to parents Quinton and Betty Slone, who survive.

On Nov. 7, 1987, she married Vernis Thornsberry, who survives at their residence in Raven, Ky.

She is also survived by one daughter, Vanessa Thornsberry of Raven, Ky.; by five brothers; four sisters.

She was preceded in death by two sets of grandparents; by a nephew.

Jeanne E. Dunlap, 83

Jeanne E. Dunlap, 83, of 427 Taffy Court in Union City, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Union City Care Center.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1929, in St. Marys to Otto E. and Frances Geraldine (Mooney) Schrolucke.
