Walter Roy Buckholter, 80, of Celina, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at the Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater. Walter was born on Nov. 2, 1932 in Zanesville to the late Roy and Clara (Coyle) Burckholter.
On Aug. 21, 1954, he married Mary Lois Samsel.
Leroy Earl Lower Jr., 62, of St. Marys, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at VA Medical Center in Dayton.
He was born on June 10, 1950, in Kendallville, Ind., to Leroy and Martha (Daughtery) Lower Sr..
Survivors include: three daughters, Flora Belle Lower of Glendale, Ariz., daughter Lydia Lower of Glendale, Ariz. and daughter Amy Lower of Winter Haven, Fla.; three sons, Luke Lower of Glendale, Ariz., Reuben Lower of Glendale, Ariz. and Sean Lower of Lakeland, Fla.; three sisters.
NEW BREMEN — As New Bremen schools celebrated an 87 percent pass rate on the third-grade Reading Achievement Test, up from 61 percent two years ago, the excitement was tempered by the reminder that the district may soon face more testing and scrutiny thanks to a bill recently passed by the Ohio House of Representatives.
Superintendent Howard Overman warned the New Bremen Board of Education on Wednesday that if House Bill 555 becomes law, it would both increase the rigor of standardized testing and set a higher bar for the number of students required to pass the test.
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Board of Education meeting Wednesday night centered on several key topics.
The first issue discussed was the levy the board hopes to pass. Members unanimously approved a resolution declaring their intent to proceed with the election on the question of an income tax and an additional tax exceeding the 10-mill limitation.
Board Treasurer Tom Sommer gave The Evening Leader a breakdown of the levy’s future and what action still needs to be taken.
