Marion Local punches ticket for return trip to title game with 3OT nailbiter

WAPAKONETA — Marion Local has tightrope walked its way to Massillon.

Jacy Goettemoeller took a pitch off right tackle, leapt over a McComb defender and burrowed his way in from seven yards out to lift a charmed Marion Local to a 34-28 win in triple overtime in a Division VI state semi-final at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field on Friday night.

The Flyers (12-2) will play Newark Catholic on Friday, Nov. 30 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium with a chance to win back-to-back state crowns and earn the school’s sixth state championship.

Local Returns From East Coast

ST. MARYS — A local Red Cross official recently returned to St. Marys after a two-week stint helping with the recovery efforts on the East Coast in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

Red Cross of Auglaize County Chapter Director Ken Cline left for New York shortly after the devastating storm left its mark on the East Coast. Cline spent much of his time in the Rockaways, which was among the hardest hit regions of New York.

Rider Takes Life In Stride

ST. MARYS — For senior Nick Durkee, his plans after high school are 75 percent certain.

He is not stressed about that 25 percent of uncertainty, but chooses to approach the future with a “whatever happens, happens” attitude.

“For now, I’m just planning on going to college for engineering,” Durkee said. “Wright State is my main option. I hope to run cross country there, too.”  

Hospital Joins Network

ST. MARYS — In hopes of bringing advanced stroke care to the area, Joint Township District Memorial Hospital has joined Ohio State University’s stroke telemedicine network.

The network connects rural hospitals with specialists in a cost-effective, timely manner, creating better patient outcomes. Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Director of Emergency and Ambulatory Care Services Lana Hinders said the hospital was approached to join the network, which is funded through the Ohio Department of Health, last year.

Lela J. Will, 91

Lela J. Will, 91, of New Bremen died at 1:23 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at the Heritage Manor Nursing Center, Minster.  

She was born on July 28, 1921, in Liberty Township in Mercer County.  

She was the daughter of Lewis J. and Addie M. (Alt) Bauer.  

On Aug. 29, 1953, she married Elmer Will who preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2011.  

Bins Hit St. Marys

ST. MARYS — An annual toy drive to benefit children in the St. Marys School District is in full swing.

Barrels looking for donations as part of the Toys for Tots drive are out in full force at approximately 30 local businesses. Organizer Steve Mackenbach has been in charge of the drive for more than two decades.

“The thing about it I like the most is that everyone just seems up beat about it,” Mackenbach said. “Everyone seems to enjoy it and it’s just a positive thing.”

Rickey E. Isbell, 45

Rickey E. Isbell, 45, of 200 Knoxville Ave., St. Marys, died suddenly at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, in the emergency department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
Funeral arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys.

Eugene F. “Gene” Bergman, 82

Eugene F. “Gene” Bergman, 82, of 8635 Erie Drive, Maria Stein, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at his home in Maria Stein.

He was born on Oct. 1, 1930, in Maria Stein, to Lawrence and Frances (Bruns) Bergman, and they preceded him in death.

On June 20, 1956, in Osgood, he married Kathleen “Kate” Schulze, and she preceded him in death 11 days ago on Nov. 10.

Richard L. Rasberry, 56

November 23, 2012

Richard L. Rasberry, 56, of Celina, died at 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on Jan. 4, 1956, in Celina, to James Rasberry and Dona Lauber, and they preceded him in death.

On Sept. 5, 1992, he married Michele Ann Gray, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 20, 2000.

He is survived by two brothers, Mike (Janet) Rasberry of Celina and Garry (Annette) Moorman of Heartland, Mich.; a sister, Patrica (Dennis) Pruitt of Columbia, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Mary Rasberry of Polson, Mont.

Cards Welcome Grandparents

NEW BREMEN — Grandparents learned about respect, monkeys and Tony Chestnut from their grandchildren, who put on a show Tuesday afternoon for the annual Grandparents Day celebration at New Bremen Elementary.

Kindergarten students showed off their singing and dancing skills while telling their grandparents about what they have learned in school this year with a lineup of choreographed songs. Kindergarten Teacher Debbie Miller thanked the grandparents in attendance for all the work they do with their grandchildren to help them advance in school.
