Obama Rallies Supporters

LIMA — President Barack Obama declared Americans need a champion for their causes and interests in Washington, D.C. and more work needs to be done on Capitol Hill to move the United States forward.

Obama addressed approximately 3,800 people gathered Friday afternoon in the gymnasium at Lima Senior High School, the third stop in a whirlwind one-day trip in Ohio, to rally Democrats with the election four days away.

Rider Relishes Being A Leader

ST. MARYS — Leadership, entrepreneurship and education are all important to Memorial High School senior Adam Neal.

“I believe I’m a real good leader,” Neal said of what separates him from other students. “I can help dictate a lot of things and I can help people cooperate and bring people together to help solve problems.”

Neal credited his grandfather for making him a strong leader.

Faber, Hinds Face Off

CELINA — A Celina Republican and a Lima Libertarian are set to square off for the 12th District Ohio Senate seat on Tuesday.

Incumbent Keith Faber is seeking to retain his seat over challenger Paul D. Hinds. Faber, who was first appointed to the Senate seat in 2007 to fill the unexpired term of Jim Jordan, also served three terms in the Ohio House.

“I think it’s important we continue to work on policies that allow jobs to grow,” Faber told The Evening Leader. “Work force development is also a big issue.”

Ruth G. Howell, 88

Ruth G. Howell, 88, of St. Marys, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 2:47 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Otterbein St. Marys.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1924, in Glynwood, the daughter of Roy and Onis (Craft) McDermitt, and they preceded her in death.

On Sept. 24, 1946, she married Vernon D. Howell, and he preceded her in death in December 1951.

Martha R. Barhorst, 65

Martha R. Barhorst, 65, of 46 E. Park St., Fort Loramie, died on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, Ind.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1947, in Greenville, to Norbert and Amelia (DeLoye) Heckman, and they preceded her in death.

On Nov. 15, 1969, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Osgood, she married Jerome U. Barhorst, and he survives in Fort Loramie.

ST. MARYS — A limnologist who has been tasked with overseeing the alum applications at Grand Lake St. Marys the previous two years says comments attributed to him in a Columbus Dispatch article indicating the applications did not work were misinterpreted.

Update: Woman Pulled From River

ST. MARYS — A St. Marys woman was pulled from the St. Marys River Thursday afternoon by several local law enforcement officials.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. Thursday, a 911 call was placed reporting a woman was floating in the St. Marys River, between South and Spring streets. That call was placed by Auglaize County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Little — who was off duty at the time.

Dr. Robert Lee Westerheide, 78

Dr. Robert Lee Westerheide, 78, of Mount Vernon, died suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at his home in Mount Vernon.

He was born on June 21, 1934, in Minster, to Henry A. and Mildred (Froning) Westerheide, and they preceded him in death.

On June 25, 1960, he married his wife of 52 years, Loretta (Severt), and she survives him.
