Versailles roars past New Bremen, 42-8

VERSAILLES — On a wet and dreary night the Versailles Tigers football team did most of their damage in the second quarter as they built up a 28-0 halftime lead. They built on that in the second half and defeated the New Bremen Cardinals 42-8 Friday night at Versailles.

“They played better than us,” Cardinals head coach Jason McGaharan said. “Pick a phase and they played better than us.”

With a wet field it was hard to get any traction for either team., but McGarahan refused to let that be an excuse for his team.

Oil Derrick Project Unveiled

ST. MARYS — A local lake organization kicked off a campaign today to help raise money to honor the rich history of Grand Lake St. Marys.

The Lake Improvement Association is in the early stage of a fundraising campaign to build an oil derrick at the site of what locally is believed to be the country’s first offshore oil derrick in Grand Lake St. Marys. LIA Secretary Kate Anderson said the project has been several months in the making.

Local Student Has Full Plate

ST. MARYS — Between participating in school sports, various school organizations and keeping active outside of school, St. Marys Memorial High School senior Katlyn Brown has her hands full.

Brown plays volleyball and softball, and she is also involved in Relay for Life, National Honor Society, Student Council, FCA and Girl Talk.

Rangers Stage Olympics

NEW KNOXVILLE — Fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students kept busy building a castle, playing soccer and cheering on their teachers in German Jeopardy, among other German-themed activities, Friday morning, as the students participated in German Club Olympics.

The competition, organized each year by the students in German Club, provides an opportunity for the fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students to learn about German culture.

Edwin E. Springer, 65, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:44 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his family. 

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Wapakoneta, where arrangements are incomplete.

Brenda K. Fischer, 59, of St. Marys, died on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at her residence.

Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.

CROSS COUNTRY: Area teams tune up at Coldwater

COLDWATER — The Coldwater Lion’s Club cross country meet is a test run for the Midwest Athletic Conference meet for the conference’s teams. For other area squads the meet one of the final tune-ups before their respective league meets against one of the best area fields.

Van Wert’s boys and Coldwater’s girls teams both edged out Minster for team wins on Thursday evening.

GOLF: Area golfers bow out at district tournaments

DIVISION II AT SYCAMORE SPRINGS

St. Marys Carter Bowman's strong sophomore season came to an end after he shot an 81 at the Division II district meet at Sycamore Springs on Thursday.

Bowman advanced from the Country Acres sectional a week ago.

Wauseon won the district title to advance to state with a team score of 335.  Bryan also advanced with a 337 score after winning a tiebreaker with Napoleon and Port Clinton.

The Division II state meet will be held on the Scarlet and Gray Courses in Columbus.

Shelby Co. Pair Indicted

SIDNEY — A Shelby County grand jury has indicted two officials with the Shelby County Humane Society on alleged theft charges that included using the organization’s funds to pay for personal items.

In a news release issued on Thursday, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart announced the indictments against Mike Lescowitch, president of the Shelby County Humane Society, and Angela Bray, treasurer for the organization. Lescowitch was indicted on one count of theft in office, a fourth-degree felony, and Bray faces one count of theft, a fifth-degree felony.
