NEW BREMEN — New Bremen residents gathered at the elementary building Tuesday night to take a tour of the building and to hear a presentation about the possibility of a renovation or constructing a new building.
New Bremen Board of Education members and administrators led residents through several stops throughout the elementary building, pointing out problems with the building.
“What we showed you tonight was the worst (of the building),” Board of Education President Keith Bornhorst said.
ST. MARYS — Seventy-two people walked into Easy Campground in St. Marys with an equal shot of walking away with $10,000 as part of a promotion hosted by two local newspapers.
The Evening Leader and the Wapakoneta Daily News crowned the winner of the Dash for Cash promotion Tuesday night. One-by-one, the 72 participants walked across the stage until there was only one left standing. In the end, New Bremen resident Jon Wente walked away with the cash and a huge smile.
Shirley A. Baker, 77, of 5312 U.S. Route 127, Celina, died at 5:14 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born on Feb. 5, 1934, in St. Henry, to Bertrand and Gertrude (Rafferty)Myers.
On Nov. 27, 1954, she married William Baker, and he preceded her in death on June 20, 2006.
She is survived by her son, Rick Baker of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a graddaughter; a sister.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Wanda L. “Jean” Drees, 90, of St. Marys, died at 5:06 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Aug. 14, 1921, in Washington Township, Auglaize County, the daughter of Harve and Pearl (Fryer) Russell, and they preceded her in death.
In 1939, she married Clarence “Shorty” Meyers, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1975. On Dec. 29, 1990, she married Henry B. Drees, and he survives in St. Marys.

BATH TOWNSHIP — Bath missed its point-blank opportunity to untie Monday’s scoreless match with St. Marys. The Roughriders took advantage on their best chance.
Megan Schmehl, a St. Marys junior defender, lofted a short rebound shot over the head of the Bath keeper following a corner kick midway through the second half to give St. Marys the difference in a 1-0 win over the Wildkittens on Monday night.

Gertrude “Trudy” Schwieterman Kuenning, 74, died on Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Concord, N.H., after a long illness.
She was born on April 17, 1937, in Celina, the daughter of Urban and Corinne Schwieterman, and they preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin Kuenning of Concord, N.H., and Keith (Tess) Kuenning of Bow, N.H.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, David (Ruth Ann Kremer) Schwieterman of New Bremen and Dr. Donald (Marilyn Willke) Schwieterman, M.D., of Maria Stein.

Volleyball: Celina 3, Minster 0
MINSTER — Despite a strong start the Minster Wildcats volleyball team couldn’t handle the Celina Bulldogs as they were defeated 25-21, 25-16 and 25-10 in a non-league game at Minster. The Wildcats (4-4) travel to FT. Loramie on Monday, while the Bulldogs entertain Versailles on Tuesday.
ST. MARYS — A group of amateur radio operators from Auglaize and Mercer counties converged on Grand Lake St. Marys Saturday to take part in a contest that had them contacting people from as far away as China and Russia.
The Reservoir Amateur Radio Association once again took part in the Ohio State Parks On the Air program — a contest that pitted clubs from across Ohio. The event was sponsored by the Portage County Amateur Radio Service. Each club was tasked with contacting as many of the 75 state parks as possible during the eight-hour window.
CELINA — A Celina native recounted his brush with death on Sept. 11, 2001, as part of a ceremony paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate price that day.
Jerry Winhoven had a first-hand view of the terrorist attack on New York City and the World Trade Center that fateful September morning. Winhoven, who was in one of the towers during the attacks, shared his story as the keynote speaker during a ceremony in memory the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 Sunday afternoon at Lakeshore Park in Celina.
