The St. Marys boys cross country team captured a season-opening victory in a quad meet at K.C. Geiger Park on Tuesday, paced by meet winner Alex Mielke. The Wapakoneta girls capture the Auglaize County event, while New Knoxville’s girls team turned in the top two times of the race.
The Roughrider boys finished first with 30 points, edging out second-place New Bremen (34 points). Wapakoneta took third (86) and New Knoxville was fourth (92).
Mielke won the race with a 17:50 time for the Roughriders.
Girls Meet
Just a few minutes into Tuesday’s season opener between the St. Marys and Delphos St. John’s girls soccer teams, it was clear this was a new season and the two familiar teams were on the opposite ends of the experience continuum.
The Roughriders blanked the Blue Jays 10-0 in a rematch of last fall’s dramatic district final.
The obvious storyline entering the game was a rematch between teams that met in the Division II district title at Elida game last fall that saw Delphos St. John’s stun St. Marys in overtime penalty kicks.
MINSTER — Two drivers were transported by medical helicopter to a regional hospital after a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon near Minster.
According to a report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, at 12:17 p.m., Christopher Blumenstock, of Minster, was driving a 2001 Honda Odyssey and traveling east on Ohio 119 when he attempted to pass another vehicle. Blumenstock’s vehicle struck a 2005 Chevy Impala that was driven by Caitlin Gross, of Sidney, who was traveling west on Ohio 119.
NEW BREMEN — Area councilors voted to move forward with a project after passing an emergency vote Tuesday evening.
New Bremen Village Councilors passed an emergency resolution to hire R.L. Quinter Well Drilling of Burkettsville to proceed with the enlarging of a water well on Isern Farm, at a cost not to exceed $40,000.
ST. MARYS — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake that rattled Virginia and much of the northern East Coast caused instruments at Wright State University Lake Campus to jump Tuesday afternoon.
The quake struck shortly before 2 p.m. and its epicenter was near Mineral, Va., west of Richmond. The impact of the quake caused a monitoring station at the Lake Campus to jump and the Auglaize County EMA reported receiving numerous phone calls regarding an earthquake.
Bertha M. King, 96, of Lima, died at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Otterbein Nursing Home in Cridersville.
She was born on Oct. 3, 1914, in New Bremen, to Henry and Emma (Solemann) Schowe, and they preceded her in death.
On Aug. 12, 1939, she married Walter L. King, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2003.
She is survived by a daughter, Gloria (Donald) Olson of Bonsall, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth King of Fremont.
Victor “Vic” Woodall, 72, of St. Marys, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born on Aug. 14, 1939, in Troy, to Robert E. and Jennie (Sharits) Woodall, and they preceded him in death.
His wife of 47 years, Vicke (Davis) Woodall, survives him.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vic was preceded in death by a brother; a brother-in-law.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Susan L. Warner, 52, of 207 S. Franklin St., New Bremen, died on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at her residence of natural causes.
She was born on May 19, 1959, in St. Marys, the daughter of Karl and Evelyn (Gieseke) Warner.
She is survived by a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating.
Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
The family will receive friends one hour before services at the funeral home.
Eric W. Evans, 48, of Clover, S.C., formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Davis Regional Medical Center, from injuries suffered a single vehicle accident Monday morning.
He was born on Sept. 29, 1962, in Lima, the son of Thomas D. and Virginia (Bogart) Evans. His mother survives in Wapakoneta, along with his stepmother, Sandy Evans. His father and his stepfather, James Sockrider, both preceded him in death.
