The Rev. James O. Byrne, 99, died at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at St. Charles Center infirmary in Carthagena.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1911, in Glynnwood, to Thomas P. and Anna (Cogan) Byrne, and they preceded him in death.
ST. MARYS — The decision to outsource second and third shift cleaning duties in the St. Marys School District will have to wait until next week.
ST. MARYS — Local seniors have been learning healthy strategies for better living as part of various programs at the Auglaize County Council on Aging.
On Thursday, seniors at the center took a break from exercising to participate in “Blueberry Day,” where they learned about blueberries and their health benefits.
“Our goal for our seniors is to do things that are light, fit and healthy,” ACCA Activities Director Evelyn Hartley said as she prepared items for that day’s treat. “Today is blueberries.”

MINSTER — The Wapakoneta ACME baseball team showed it could make things interesting late — in both the best and worst sense — during the Auglaize County sectional tournament this week.
But above all the Redskins revealed that they were the county's best summer baseball team.
Wapakoneta held off a late Minster charge for a 6-5 win in the sectional title game on Wednesday night to finish the tournament unscathed with a 3-0 record with comebacks and close calls throughout.
The Rev. James O. Byrne, 99, a long-time priest who served many parishes in the area, died on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the infirmary of St. Charles Seminary in Carthagena.
Arrangements are being completed with the Miller Funeral Homes in St. Marys.
Diane Sue Koons, 70, of 1815 Winston Drive, St. Marys, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Sept. 5, 1940, in Sidney, the daughter of William and Eldora (Hughes) Haney, and they preceded her in death.
On July 2, 1963, she married Roger R. Koons, and he preceded her in death on July 27, 2009.
ST. MARYS — Three St. Marys locals will be heading to Columbus later this month to participate in the state’s fair band.
Current St. Marys Memorial High School seniors, Troy Newlove and Drew Poppe, will join alumnus Tanner Zizelman to participate in the 2011 All-Ohio State Fair Band during the Ohio State Fair in Columbus.
“We go down the 23rd,” Newlove said. “Then we have four days of nonstop practice before the fair starts. We have performances all throughout the fair.”
ST. MARYS — A group of residents with community service on their minds will be handing out putters and scorecards for the next eight weeks as part of a service project.
Clients of Anthony Wayne Services’ Day-Hab Services will be volunteering at the miniature golf course at K.C. Geiger Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday through August starting next week. The facility, located at 1621 Celina Road, St. Marys, also will donate its proceeds to various local nonprofit groups.
