Sarah Ann “Sally” Coate, 58

Sarah Ann “Sally” Coate, 58, of Celina, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011, at her residence.

She was born on March 20, 1953, to Raymond L. and Patricia A. (Knott) Giesige, and they preceded her in death.

On Dec. 29, 1972, she married Jared L. “Jerry” Coate, and he survives her.

She is also survived by a son, Heath Coate of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a daughter, Heather (Kevin) Schmidt of Celina; two grandsons; six brothers; three sisters; two brothers-in-law.

Paul F. Ahlers, 80

Paul F. Ahlers, 80, of Dogwood Drive, Fort Loramie, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, at his residence.

He was born on April 25, 1931, in Frenchtown, to Frank L. and Gertrude (Eilerman) Ahlers, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 26, 1953, he married Eileen M. Hilgefort, and she survives him.

Gertrude “Trudy” Schwieterman Kuenning, 74

Gertrude “Trudy” Schwieterman Kuenning, 74, died on Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Concord, N.H., after a long illness.  

She was born on April 17, 1937, at Otis Hospital in Celina, the daughter of Urban and Corinne Schwieterman, and they preceded her in death.

Crews Respond To Hendricks Avenue Fire

ST. MARYS — More than half a dozen trucks responded to a fire on Hendricks Avenue Monday night.

St. Marys Fire Chief Joey Weaver said the department received a 911 call at 7:08 p.m. Monday reporting a fire at 606 Hendricks Ave. When crews arrived, Weaver said they discovered smoke coming from the attic.

Minster wins two over weekend at District ACME tourney

ST. HENRY — The Minster Wildcats are the lone team in the St. Henry portion of the district ACME bracket without a loss after a pair of wins over the weekend. A 10-4 win over Delphos St. John’s on Saturday and a 10-0 run-rule win over Van Wert on Sunday have Minster a win away from advancing to the finals of the district tourney.

Wapakoneta stayed alive on Sunday with a win over Delphos St. John’s on Sunday a day after falling behind early and losing to Van Wert 10-8 on Saturday at St. Henry.

Pair Opens Pottery Shop

NEW BREMEN — Two New Bremen natives have started a business that lets them add a personal touch to pottery.

Sisters Amy Heitkamp and Julie Rismiller started Piggy Prints Pottery back in March, after one sister returned to the area. The company offers hand-painted pottery for keepsakes.

Concert Rocks Hickory Hills

FORT LORAMIE — Music filled the air as country fans flocked to Hickory Hills in Fort Loramie for the 31st annual Country Concert.

The three-day event ended Saturday evening and included camping and country music from big names in the industry, including Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean.

Many people helped make this festival a success, including concert workers,  security and parking supervisors from dedicated citizens, including Lima’s Lee Lauck.

Legislators look ahead

ST. MARYS — With the biennial budget signed, sealed and delivered, a pair of local legislators say they plan to turn their attention to several other issues during the remainder of the year. “The big things coming up are redistricting and reform of the pensions and worker’s compensation,” State Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina, said. “The Constitution requires that after every census we do both redistricting and reapportionment.” Faber said the state will lose two Congressional seats given the population loss during the last decade.

Local artist displays wares

ST. MARYS — A local artist is featuring her work as part of her first exhibit of only her pieces at the gallery in downtown St. Marys. Marjorie Stienecker’s watercolors are on display at Arts Place’s Collective Center, 138 E. Spring St., St. Marys. “This is a rare opportunity to view Marjorie Stienecker’s works, the originals,” Education Director Heidi Meade said. “We’ve collected these pieces from people around the county, and they are on loan to Arts Place.” Her paintings feature multiple local landmarks.
