Senator Works To Help Grand Lake St. Marys

ST. MARYS — A local state senator says he hopes three provisions he fought to include in the biennial budget aimed at helping Grand Lake St. Marys make it to the governor’s desk.

State Sen. Keith Faber proposed shifting $4 million of Waterways Safety funds initially earmarked for a marina at Caesar Creek, in Waynesville, to Grand Lake St. Marys for algae mitigation. Faber told The Evening Leader funding from the marina would then come from a capital improvement fund.

Student Succeeds In Program

WAPAKONETA — A local partnership between an educational center and a Wapakoneta business has lead to the ultimate accomplishment for a program designed for children with autism.

The Auglaize County Educational Service Center (ESC) provides a program, Project Independence, which is a transitional program designed for children with autism to give them the skills they need to live on their own after high school.

Center Needs Help

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Community Youth Center was forced to temporarily close Wednesday because of the loss of its two government-funded positions.

The center previously had two workers from Experience Works, a government-based company, but because of budget cut-backs, when one the workers moved, the position was not filled and the second position was dropped.

“Right now we’re in a bind,” Director Donna Graham said. “We have no one to work here.”

Minster 6, New Bremen 2

NEW BREMEN — The Minster ACME baseball team batted around in the sixth inning and broke open a 2-2 game with four runs and a 6-2 victory over the New Bremen ACME Thursday at New Bremen.

It was the first victory for Minster in the ACME season.

“I thought we hit the ball pretty well tonight and I’m pleased with how the players came to the plate with a good approach ,” Minster coach Alex Brandewie said.

St. Marys Memorial upgrades weight room equipment

New weight room equipment was installed at Memorial High School on June 8 and the early feedback from the students has been positive.

“Kids can be pretty tough on equipment so we made sure we got heavy-duty stuff that will hold up,” St. Marys Athletic Director Joe Bline said.

The Equipment Guys, a company out of  Urbancrest, Ohio, supplied the equipment.

The  cost of the weight room equipment was originally $60,000, but the three lowest bids for the equipment all came in over $10,000 below that estimate in March.

Willard B. “Red” Dilbone, 93

June 17, 2011

Willard B. “Red” Dilbone, 93, of Mendon, died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, June, 16, 2011, at the Laurles of Shane Hill in Rockford.

He was born on March 15, 1918 to Ray and Marie (Pond) Dilbone, and they preceded him in death.

On Dec. 25, 1951, he married Hollies Nolan, and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Carole (Montie) McGillary of Mendon and Audrey (Stephan) Snyder of Mendon; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Derrick Michael Coldiron, 14

June 17, 2011

Derrick Michael Coldiron, 14, of 224 W. Anthony St., Celina, died on Wednesday, June, 15, 2011, at Children’s Medical Center in Dayton.

He was born on March 19, 1997, in Coldwater,  the son of Casandra Coldiron, and she survives.

He is also survived by his siblings; maternal grandparents; an aunt; two uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., St. Marys, with the Rev. Tony Richmond officiating.

The Rev. Kenneth H. Worthman, 85

The Rev. Kenneth H. Worthman, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, in Palm Bay, Fla.

He was born on March 16, 1926, in Freeport, Ill., the son of the Rev. R.A. and Huldah Worthman, and they preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, Edward (Gail) Worthman of Frankfort, Ill., Paul (Diana) Worthman of Ocala, Fla., and Diane Reis of St. Louis; his grandchildren Kyle and Kara Worthman.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Worthman.

Helen E. Ryan, 84

June 17, 2011

Helen E. Ryan, 84, of 1910 Heritage Court, St. Marys, died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the Celina Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born on May 9, 1927, in Herrin, Ill., the daughter of the Rev. O.V. and Faye (Rhoads) Mewbourn.

She first married L. Rex Baker, and he preceded her in death in 1983. She then married Charles Ryan, and he preceded her in death in 2001.
