Saturday Girls Basketball: New Bremen, Minster win

Minster 44, Fort Loramie 43

MINSTER — Claire Fischer drained a free throw with five seconds left to give Minster a 44-43 win over rival Fort Loramie on Saturday afternoon at Minster.

Minster rallied back from a deficit in the third quarter with a big run spurred by Bridget Geiger and Tara Clune.

Clune scored a team-high 14 points (eight of those in the second half) and Geiger added 12 points for the Wildcats (10 of those in the third quarter and all 12 in the second half).

The St. Marys boys basketball team started another game off sluggishly, spotting the Kenton Wildcats 10 points to start Friday night’s Western Buckeye League opener.

This time the Roughriders awoke from the slumber in time to pick up their first victory of the season.

Engineer ‘Beets’ Icy Roads

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County engineer is trying a new method to combat snow and ice on roads this winter — beat juice.

Starting with a truck equipped with one unit of a beet juice salt brine mixture, which treats stone and salt before it is laid on county roads, Auglaize County Engineer Doug Reinhart said they are in the process of adding three additional units.

Rangers Bleed For Others

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville Local School students and staff joined together to save approximately 90 lives Friday morning by donating 15 minutes of their time to donate blood, as the school hosted its annual Red Cross blood drive.

The New Knoxville Student council organized the annual drive, bringing approximately 30 students and staff members to the little gym at New Knoxville Local School. According to the Red Cross, three lives are saved with each donation. Every two seconds, according to the Red Cross, a blood transfusion is needed.

Students DARE’d To Succeed

ST. MARYS — Local fifth-grade students officially graduated from a drug-prevention program during a ceremony held Friday morning.

Fifth-grade students at Holy Rosary School and St. Marys Intermediate School participated in their DARE graduation, where DARE Deputy Sam Blank congratulated them on reaching the milestone.

Kicking off the event, Blank stressed that DARE isn’t just about drugs.

Lockie Imogene Wheeler, 80

Lockie Imogene Wheeler, 80, of Celina, died on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

She was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Braggadocia, Mo., to Robert and Nancy (Glidwell) Neal, and they preceded her in death.

She married Albert Hawkins, and he preceded her in death. On Aug. 4, 1982, she married Eugene Jerome “Jack” Wheeler, and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2006.

Ruth May Hubbard, 74

Ruth May Hubbard, 74, of Lafayette, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011.  

She was born on Jan. 20, 1937, in St. Marys, to Howard and Ruth Boroff Thomas, and they preceded her in death.

On Jan. 6, 1956, in Lafayette, she married Elmer Hubbard, and he preceded her in death.

Rescheduled Winterfest Set For Sunday

ST. MARYS — Santa will host a parade at 4 p.m. Sunday as part of Winterfest. The parade, as usual, will travel along Spring Street from Front Street to Chestnut Street.  The parade will end with watching the Live Nativity, then taking his seat in his house at Memorial Park where he will have special hours during the Christmas season. Each child will receive a bag of goodies to take home when they visit Santa at the Santa House during the holiday season. Santa and the gift bags are courtesy of the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce and the St. Marys Kiwanis Club and the St.
