ST. MARYS — With the region receiving its first snow of the season earlier this week, school officials are reminding residents to keep their sidewalks clear for local children.
“I see the kids when I’m going into work,” he said. “A lot of the kids will be walking or riding their bikes to school — it’s dangerous for them to do that if the sidewalk isn’t clear,” St. Marys Superintendent Jerry Skiver said.
He noted that unclear sidewalks can cause the students to walk in the street.
ST. MARYS — An apparel store opened its doors in downtown St. Marys Friday morning to area residents, offering a variety of school and custom, embroidered apparel.
Victory Apparel, located at 124 W. Spring St., St. Marys, offers a slew of local school apparel, including St. Marys, New Bremen, New Knoxville, Minster, Wapakoneta and Spencerville, in addition to a variety of Ohio State University apparel. Business Manager Sheila Goins said the owners of the local shop decided to expand into St. Marys to fill a need.
MASSILLON — The white screen-printed 34 on Christian Hauber’s Kirtland Hornets jersey is cracked and faded like a distressed t-shirt. Everyone else’s numbers are crisp and intact.
It’s no fashion statement, though. The 6-foot-1, 218-pound fullback earns every bit of the jersey’s degradation with a tough running style that has his team celebrating its first-ever state championship.
Kirtland captured the Division V state crown with a 28-7 win over Coldwater on Friday to cap a perfect 15-0 season.
ST. MARYS — In the wake of this week’s snow storm, local officials are urging motorists to keep informed as winter draws closer.
“It’s really important to listen to weather forecasts this time of year,” Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said. “We try to put up notices early on our Facebook page early enough to catch them. We also don’t want people to think that if we put up a notice and we don’t get it that we are crying wolf.”
Frederick J. Schmitmeyer, 88, of South Lincoln Street, Minster, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys of natural causes.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1923, in Minster to Emma (Thieman) and Henry Schmitmeyer. On Aug. 23, 1947, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Coldwater, he married Alberta (Wellman) Schmitmeyer.
Billie J. Pinson, 78, of 4710 Mud Pike, Celina, passed away at 9:56 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert.
She was born on March 3, 1933, in Summit, W.Va., to Benjamin and Brady (Massey) Lafferdy.
On April 21, 1951, she married her husband of 60 years, Clarence Pinson, who lives in Celina.
Mary Lou Nagel, 84, of 217 Sturgeon St. in St. Marys, died at 11 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on July 18, 1927, in St. Marys, to Edwin and LaVere (Hudson) Martin.
In 1958, she married LeRoy L. Nagel, who survives.
She is also survived by: three sons, David Nagel of Bowling Green, Kim (Kay) Nagel of Union City, Tenn., Kevin Nagel of St. Marys; 11 grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren.
Marie E. Wente, 90, of New Bremen, died on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Joint Township Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born on Aug. 1, 1921, in Maria Stein, the daughter of Fred and Helen (Walterbusch) Luebke. She was married on May 4, 1946, in Maria Stein to Leo R. Wente; he died on May 5, 1988.
NEW BREMEN — An area village held its annual holiday kick off ceremony Thursday evening, officially turning on its holiday lights.
The New Bremen-New Knoxville Rotary’s Christmas Tree Lighting was Thursday in Lock One Park, and it included hot chocolate, cookies and a visit from Santa.
CELINA — A father and daughter were found dead Wednesday morning at their residence, bound with duct tape and dead from gun shot wounds.
