Vehicle Strikes, Kills Child

SIDNEY — A 3-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday following a collision with a car.

According to a news release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Riverside Drive at approximately 5:39 p.m. to a report of a car that collided with a child.

Deputies determined a 2005 Hyundai was traveling west on Riverside Drive (Ohio 47), when a child ran into its path. The driver attempted an evasive measure in order to avoid hitting the child but was unable to do so. The vehicle struck the child in the roadway.

Village Tackles Snow Parking

NEW BREMEN — During their meeting Tuesday evening, area councilors took the first step in addressing an issue that comes up each winter.

New Bremen Village Councilors passed the first reading of the ordinance to enact street parking regulations when snow reaches a certain height.

New Bremen Police Chief Doug Harrod noted the village has had an issue with being able to plow public streets because of parked cars.

Barrels Delivered

ST. MARYS — As local residents take to the stores on Friday to begin holiday shopping, one local business owner says he hopes those shoppers pick up a little extra for those in need.

The annual Toys for Tots campaign kicked off this week. Local Coldwell Banker owner Steve Mackenbach delivered barrels to more than two dozen local businesses and factories with the goal of collecting toys for the annual Goodfellows program, which distributes the items to needy families in the St. Marys School District.

Mary F. Webb, 73

November 23, 2011

Mary F. Webb, 73, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.  

She was born on Jan. 26, 1938, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of John and Verona (Bustetter) Mosler, and they preceded her in death.  

On Sept. 28, 1957, she married James D. Webb, and he survives her.

Chester E. Hittepole Sr., 85

November 23, 2011

Chester E. Hittepole Sr., 85, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at  Lima Memorial Health System.  

He was born on Oct. 5, 1926, in St. Johns, the son of Glen and Mabel (Kiese) Hittepole, and they preceded him in death.  

On Feb. 17, 1947, he married Dorothy M. Werling, and she survives him.

Loretta I. Bustetter, 84

Loretta I. Bustetter, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.  

She was born on Dec. 13, 1926, in Auglaize County, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Brautigam) Seitz, and they preceded her in death.  

On June 6, 1945, she married Alfred A. Bustetter, and he survives her.

Findlay beats Cedarville in battle of former Rangers

FINDLAY — A pair of former New Knoxville Rangers went head-to-head in early season college basketball action when the University of Findlay faced Cedarville on Tuesday night.

Former Ranger and Findlay junior Brad Piehl and the Oilers emerged with a 90-84 win over Marcus Reineke and Cedarville.

Reineke went 5-for-5 from beyond  the three-point arc and scored a team-high 17 points for the Yellow Jackets. Reineke, a freshman guard, came off the bench and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor.

Area Women's College Basketball Players Begin Seasons

Erika Thornsberry - Lipscomb

Erika Thornsberry, a St. Marys grad and Lipscomb freshman, is getting playing time off the bench in her first season with the Bisons.

Thornsberry scored three points and corralled four rebounds for the Bisons against Alabama A&M last Saturday.

She also had three points and four rebounds against Austin Peay on Nov. 14.

The Bison are 0-5 on the season and take to the court again at Vanderbilt on Friday night.

Today, a look at the Elida Bulldogs, whose season will get a late start as all-Ohio basketball player and quarterback Reggie McAdams has the Bulldogs a game away from a state championship game.
